Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has mastered the delicate balance between the opulent and the unassuming.

While it is certainly stylish and luxurious, it does not feel detached or out of place in the surrounding bush; it also manages to be very warm and welcoming.

This may be in part because of the understated style, yet also a credit to the excellent team running the lodge. The staff to be incredibly friendly, and the food and service exceptional.

It is one of only two lodges inside this national park – and its position at the other end of the park from the main entrance gate ensures that game drives from there don’t see too many other vehicles.

If you want a few days to take a proper look at Lake Manyara National Park, there isn’t a better lodge to use as a base. Its only real down-side is a relatively high price tag.

Accommodation
As the only lodge in Lake Manyara National Park, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is romantically exclusive with only 10 elegantly intimate stilted tree house suites.

Located within a remote corner of the reserve, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is cradled within the boughs of an ancient mahogany forest.

Furnishings and decor combine intricate details of luxury and the natural beauty of this incredibly breathtaking reserve and the cool leafy area that surrounds it.

Get lost within the luxurious space of the bedrooms and sitting rooms, the generously wide open decks and massive window areas as you while away time, enjoying this magnificent piece of heaven in the wild.

Warm wood interiors and comfortably cosy sofas in the split level guest areas provide warmth and texture to this wonderful lodge. Although spacious, Lake Manyara Tree lodge is cosy and warm, a true delight in luxurious accommodation.

Dining
Breakfast is very flexible – you can eat something before your morning activity, take a packed breakfast with you or have an early brunch when you return to the lodge.

If you choose to have breakfast or brunch at the lodge, a vast array of cereals, dried fruit, yoghurt, fresh bread and pastries will be brought to your table, and you can then order a cooked breakfast from the waiter.

A three-course dinner is served from 7.00pm – but there is no set time. A waiter will escort you to your table, usually set out under the stars, with storm lanterns to create a cosy and romantic atmosphere.

The varied menu is normally announced earlier in the day, with enough time to make any alterations if it’s not to your taste.

Swala Camp

Swala Camp is a small, luxury tented safari camp situated in a remote part of Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park.

Set in the deep south of the park, a good few hours drive away from the most commonly visited central river valley, this camp really does feel rather remote.

Of the higher end facilities in the area, Swala Camp perhaps offers the highest levels of conventional comforts.

Most excitingly it is set around a small marsh which attracts elephants throughout the dry season. This might make getting to and from your tent a bit of an adventure, but it is great for up-close interaction from your verandah.

Accommodation
Swala Camp’s nine private, permanent tents feature en-suite bathrooms with showers, complemented by fittings and fixtures crafted from local materials to mirror the understated elegance of the time-honoured safari style.

The elevated terraces on the tents are appointed towards the waterhole that attracts wildlife year-round to ensure that your African wildlife experiences do not finish when you leave your vehicle.

Throughout your stay, you will be serenaded by the resident wildlife, including impala (after which the camp is named), waterbuck, lion and various elephant groups. There is even a resident leopard that puts in the occasional guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner.

Dining
Meals at Swala Camp are taken in the comfortable dining tent, with full silver service, Pan-African cuisine and fine wines adding to the ‘country house under canvas’ ambience.

Swala’s accomplished hosts, personal tent attendants, safari guides and Masai askaris that accompany you to your tent at night enhance your stay with their own personalized African affability, professionalism and knowledge.

Wildlife
Throughout your stay, you will be serenaded by the resident wildlife, including impala (after which the camp is named), waterbuck, lion and various elephant groups. There is even a resident leopard that puts in the occasional guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner.

Activities
Bush breakfasts, picnics & dinners: You may have decided with your guide to take a picnic breakfast or lunch with you but equally lovely in the evening is to enjoy a bush dinner. A secluded clearing is prepared for a traditional East African meal in the middle of the Tarangire bush.

Visit to a school: As part of their commitment to the local community, the staff and management team at Sanctuary Swala have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that included building the Gijedabung Primary School in the nearby village of Mamire, which borders Tarangire National Park.

Beekeeping Project: Sanctuary Swala has developed a beekeeping project located in the village of Mwika on the border of Tarangire National Park.

The Manor At Ngorongoro

The Manor is a stunning new lodge located in the Ngorongoro highlands just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Sister to Tarangire Treetops and Migration Camp, it is of a similar high quality with great food and service, and it is an great base from which to explore the Ngorongoro Crater floor.

Built in a Cape Dutch style, The Manor is reminiscent of a smart farmstead which is quite apt considering its location on the 1500 acre, Shangri-La Coffee Estate.

The main areas are located within the large central farmhouse, with the lounge and dining area being divided by a central reception hall.

Accommodation
The 20 bedrooms at The Manor are dotted through the lodges gardens in numerous small cottages; two rooms occupy one cottage.

All of the rooms look out over the rolling green hills of the escarpment and are continuation of the smart Cape Dutch style.

Each room has its own private courtyard and deck, a fireplace which is welcome during the cooler months of the year, and high quality dark wood period furniture.

The en-suite bathrooms have a free-standing claw foot bath, rain shower and twin sinks. The bathrooms are quite minimalist and stylish though still in keeping with traditional look of the lodge. Courtyard and deck

Dining
Guests staying here for longer will enjoy a breakfast of homemade muesli, cereals, fruit and various breads. You can also order a cooked breakfast with bacon, sausage and eggs or perhaps a hearty bowl of hot porridge.

Lunch is a la carte with a menu that differs daily. There are always a variety of light meals such as sandwiches, fresh salads, pasta and soup. Deserts are also on the menu and include home-made ice cream, fresh fruit and other sweet delights.

Between lunch and dinner guests can help themselves to high tea with cakes, scones and cream. This is usually available from around 3 – 6pm

The silver service dinner starts at 7:30 in the evening and consists of five light courses. Start with an appetizer, before a starter such as soup. Then break with a sorbet to freshen your palate before the main course and desert.

Most of the food served at The Manor is grown on the farm and so is as fresh as it can possibly be. We certainly felt that it was tasty and fresh when we ate here and we only wish we had been able to stay for one of their dinners which sound exceptional.
