Sala’s Camp

Sala’s Camp is a tented camp that combines tradition with comfort and it’s a model of understated, intimate luxury.

Situated in the southern, wilder corner of Kenya’s mighty Maasai Mara game reserve close to the confluence of the Sand and Keekerok Rivers – an idyllic geographical feature that attracts teeming wildlife.

With just seven tented rooms, Sala’s Camp first hosted guests in 2004, and it has become justly renowned for combining an authentic safari experience with friendliness, hospitality and fine dining.

Typically, after a day’s excursion, you’ll return to meet up for sundowners by the campfire before enjoying dinner with your companions on a long dining table beneath the stars.

Sala’s Camp location is a big draw. So close to Tanzania that guests can enjoy wonderful views of the Serengeti National Park over the border, it’s in a prime position for the legendary annual migration of wildebeest, which thunders by from June to September each year.

Sala’s Camp also offers the best of the Maasai Mara’s wildlife and birdlife all year round. Our knowledgeable guides help you interpret this fascinating landscape as well as point out its flora and fauna.

Accommodation & Facilities
Sala’s Camp offers space, comfort and great views as well as an amazing safari experience. We can accommodate up to 16 guests in seven tents: six double or twin canvas tents and one spacious honeymoon suite, which can also be set up as a family suite, sleeping up to four people.

The Camp’s interiors are elegant and comfortable. We offer crisp white sheets, African throws and silken cushions. All rooms have olive-wood beds and en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, running water and flushing toilets.

There are complimentary cleansing products include shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and mosquito repellent. Also, you’ll find white towelling robes, a torch and other thoughtful touches.

The electricity is solar-powered and there is a standby generator for refrigeration and charging devices. Outside, you can relax in your hammock and watch the sun go down over the Mara.

Dinner is usually served under the stars. All guests enjoy full-board during their stay, which includes all meals and most drinks, excluding champagne and specially imported wines and spirits.

The camp is suitable for guests with limited disabilities and if required, baby-sitters and special meals can be catered for by prior arrangement.

Activities
At Sala’s Camp we offer a variety of excursions. You can see the Big Five on a 4×4 game drive and take to a hot-air balloon for a panoramic aerial safari.

Sala’s Camp’s resident big cats give you the opportunity to see these astonishing animals at close quarters. Sala’s Camp is the first camp in the Mara to witness the wildebeest migration

We also offer other experiences including candle-lit romantic dinners on the riverbank and star-gazing nights where you can learn about the formations in the dark unpolluted skies. Sala’s Camp offers a special program for children where our spotters teach young guests all the secrets of the bush.

When to Go
Kenya does not have distinct seasons because its location spans the equator. At 5,000 feet above sea level, days are warm and can get hot on the Maasai Mara, while nights are usually cool.

Overall temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the year. The rains usually come in April and May and to a lesser extent in November, but global weather patterns are nowadays less predictable, so be prepared. The Mara is an exceptional game experience all year round.

But from December through to March elephant sitings are exceptional. In June Sala’s is in prime position as the wildebeest start to cross from Tanzania into Kenya where they stay until the mid September.

September and October is the Mara’s secret season with low grass and less plains game meaning big cat activity is at its prime.

The camp is open during the dry season from June to October and from mid-November to mid-April. However, it can open at any time if required.
