Mutamaiyu House

Mutamaiyu House is perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the savannah.

Described by a visitor as “Heaven on a Hill” this magnificent family-owned house is named after the ancient grove of twisting olive trees that grow around it.

It is is a spectacularly refined retreat in one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas ? the 49,000 acre Mugie Wildlife Conservancy in Laikipia.

These rugged plains and lush woodlands are home to some of the richest diversities of wildlife on the continent including the big five with the endangered black rhino, elephant, leopard, cheetah, the rare Grevy’s zebra and stunning birdlife.

Access
By road: Approximately 4- hours driving time from Nairobi.

By air: Nearby airstrips are Mugie (10 min game drive) and Loisaba (45 min). These are private and unmanned airstrips, serviced by Mugie and Loisaba:

Accommodation
The house boasts a lavish sitting room, high ceilinged verandas and a large dining room situated in a prime viewing area for the waterhole below where day and night the interaction of wildlife present a wonderful spectacle.

A short walk through the impeccable gardens takes you to a cliff-top swimming pool and bar with stunning views.

Mutamaiyu comfortably accommodates 12 guests in six African style cottages, traditionally thatched using “makuti” (palm leaves) over a vaulted wooden frame.

Our spacious cottages, all with en-suite bathrooms (including both shower and bath) have a comfortable sitting area with a log fire.

Wildlife
Laikipia is second only to the Masai Mara as a game viewing experience. A herd of elephant has made this their territorial home and over 300 buffalo roam the plains.

Other regulars are lion, leopard, Grevy zebra (classified as an endangered species but abundant in this area), dik dik, impala, waterbuck, eland, oryx, hartebeest and reticulated giraffe; some of the rarer sights are cheetah and wild dog.

For bird lovers 285 species have been recorded.
