The Sultan Sands Island Resort is the newest resort of the Bluebay Hotels Group, having received its first guests in July 2008.

It is a uniquely constructed magical Africa resort, with a choice of 76 rooms built in single storey African style rondavels – each with two tastefully decorated rooms with a separate changing room leading into the superbly appointed en-suite bathroom.

It nestles on the beachfront of a 25 acre stretch of subtly landscaped gardens decked with over 1000 palm trees.

The Sultan Sands Island Resort is situated next to its sister resort, the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa, on the beachfront of the wide, sparkling beaches of Kiwengwa in the east coast of Zanzibar.

Rooms
The Sultan Sands Island Resort has a total of 76 rooms (56 Pwani Rooms & 20 Bahari Rooms), made up of the following categories:

Each Room (in the both room categories) offers a spacious bedroom, separate dressing room, en suite bathroom and a verandah or balcony.

The furnishings are tasteful traditional Zanzibar furniture – including either one large bed or two queen size beds with mosquito nets, separate dressing room, en suite bathroom with a shower and a spacious verandah.

A touch of modernity is added by the split-level air conditioners, ceiling fans, satellite TV’s, mini-bars, hair dryers, safes and telephones. Smoke detectors and fire alarms complete the picture.

56 Pwani Rooms: These are the newly constructed rooms. They are on rising grounds in beautiful landscaped gardens, facing out to the Ocean.

They are built in single storey traditional rondavels, each with two tastefully decorated bed rooms with separate changing rooms leading into superbly appointed en-suite bathrooms.

20 Bahari Rooms: These are the original La Villa Beach Club rooms but now carefully modernised and refurbished to be at par with the newer PWANI Rooms.

Restaurant & Bar
MWAMBAO Restaurant is the main dining facility for the Resort where Breakfast and dinner are taken for those on Half Board Meal Plan and lunch for those on Full Board or All Inclusive meal plan.

MAWIMBI Bar is the main drinks outlet at the resort. It is fabulous place for guests to sip cold drinks as they look out to the swimming pool, the beach and the ocean beyond.

KIVULI Bar & Restaurant is located right on the Beach and provides the invaluable toes-in-the-sand mid day culinary delight for our guests!

The guest house boasts a restaurant and lounge bar (all in one) which look out over the beach.

Food is served in various parts of the resort which adds interest. Twice a week it is served in the ‘boma’ around a bonfire. Literally meaning ‘enclosure’ this is an area surrounded by a fence similar in style to the traditional thorn fences that surround Maasai villages.

Sometimes dinner is served on the beach. Food comes highly recommended both for its quality and variety (though individual menus are not extensive they change regularly). The hotel uses fresh locally sourced produce.

The bar is reasonably priced though wine tends to be more expensive. It is a very relaxed hub with books and games and comfortable cushions; a perfect chill-out spot.

Activities
One of the main attractions of Matemwe is the world class diving at Mnemba Atoll.

This area of ocean offers some of the best snorkeling and diving possible off Zanzibar, with a high chance of seeing turtles and wild dolphins in addition to the diverse and colourful coral reef fish.

The Z Hotel

Each bedroom has French doors, set in floor to ceiling glass which lead onto a balcony with views over our landscaped tropical garden and out across the crystal blue waters of the Indian Ocean to the magnificent Zanzibari sunset on the distant horizon.

The Z Hotel offers alfresco dining in our main restaurant ‘Saruche’, along with Asian-fusion tapas and sharing platters in ‘Cinnamon’, our cocktail bar, where you can also find our exclusive list of mouth watering cocktails.

Activities
The hotel is located close to a professional Dive Centre. Snorkelling amongst the diverse marine life that inhabit the nearby coral reefs is also hugely popular and can be arranged through the hotel. There are also opportunities to organize deep sea fishing trips.

Excursions to Stone Town and throughout Zanzibar can be organized, though the hotel is some way from the capital. Excursions on offer from the hotel include visits to Jozani Forest, Spice Tours, Prison Island Excursion and Mnarani Turtle Sanctuary.
